Report: Xbox 360 to get iPhone-like dashboard update

Microsoft is working on an alternative way to browse the Xbox 360 menu options, a new report said on Tuesday.

According to Kotaku, Microsoft is preparing to unveil a second interface option for Xbox 360, one that uses rumored motion controls to navigate a 3D environment of options, much like the iPhone and fictional interface seen in Minority Report.

The information comes from “a number” of unnamed sources, says Kotaku, which claimed a 95 percent accuracy rate for the ambitious rumor. What’s more, the same designer behind the fictional Minority Report graphical user interface is said to be working on the Xbox 360 one, says a second report by Kotaku.

Microsoft was not immediately available for comment when contacted by GamePro on Wednesday. Nevertheless, the company is set to hold its annual Xbox media briefing on July 14 in Los Angeles, the day before E3 begins.

Internet Explorer 8 - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Now that Opera 9.5 and Firefox 3.0 are available to end users, the focus is bound to shift on Microsoft. The Redmond company has been cooking Internet Explorer 8 for over a year now, and is approximately one month away from releasing the second Beta build to the public. Since Beta 1 was set up to give web developers and designers a taste of what’s coming mainly in terms of standards support, Beta 2 is built to wow end users and, in this context, will deliver features beyond what is available in the first public development milestone, WebSlices and Activities.
Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 is scheduled to hit sometime in August, but although the IE team
is still hammering at the release, the fact is that as early as mid June 2008, features were no longer added to the milestone. On June 19, Chris Wilson, the Platform Architect for IE revealed that: “we’re still improving quality by fixing bugs in Beta 2, but we’re not implementing new features at this point for the Beta 2 release”.

Firefox Grabs Official World Record for Most Downloads in a Day

L Firefox 3 marked the latest iteration of the second most popular browser behind Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Firefox 3 team looked to set a world record for the number of downloads in a day.

Firefox 3 was made official today with Guinness certifying that Firefox 3 was downloaded 8,002,530 times in the first 24 hours of its launch. That number weeds out all duplicate downloads and automated downloads.

Even though Firefox 3 holds the record for most downloads in a day, it still holds a fraction of the browser market that number one Internet Explorer has. According to The Wall Street Journal Firefox held 19.03% of the browser market in June while Internet Explorer captured 73% of the total browser market.

Firefox and other browsers are gaining ground on Microsoft– albeit slowly. According to The Wall Street Journal, Internet Explorer lost about half a percentage point of market share per month for the last 12 months.

Mozilla announced its record setting attempt with much pomp and fanfare on June 17 and to commemorate the occasion the Internet Explorer team at Microsoft even sent over a cake.

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Released - Apple releases final 10.5.4 build

MAC OS-X 10.6.4

On May 29th, 2008 Apple released Mac OS X 10.5.3, the latest maintenance and security update to Leopard users - the version many of you are probably still using right now. As it turns out, you can now fire up Apple Software Update to get a new version of Leopard: Mac OS X 10.5.4.

“The 10.5.4 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X
Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac,” says Apple. General enhancements include recent Apple security updates, RAW image support for several cameras, and improved L2TP VPN client reliability. The update also addresses an issue that may result in a partially installed X11 application, and a bug with saving and reopening Adobe Creative Suite 3 files on a remote server.

A more detailed list of enhancements brought by Mac OS X 10.5.4 is available below:

AirPort

- Addresses AirPort reliability issues with 5GHz networks.
- Addresses AirPort issues that may result in slower performance in Logic Studio or MainStage.

iCal

- Improves overall iCal reliability for meeting requests, cancellation notices, delegation, and syncing with iPhone.
- Resolves an issue that prevents deleting an iCal event without notifying the creator.
- Addresses an issue in which events in all calendars affect availability. A checkbox now enables information-only calendars to be transparent from free/busy lookups.
- Resolves a UI issue preventing delegated calendars from showing up as a separate window.
- Addresses an issue with copying and pasting attendees from one event to another.
- Resolves an issue in which iCal may not delete events after a specified time interval, even when set to do so in iCal preferences.
- Addresses an issue in which To Dos cannot be marked private.

Safari

- Addresses a potential performance issue when loading secure web pages.
- Resolves issues that may be encountered when accessing secure web pages with client certificates that reside on a smart card.

Spaces and Exposé

- Addresses an issue in which switching from a space with a Finder window keeps the Finder as the active application instead of the application residing in the destination space.
- Fixes an issue in which dragging an application from the list of application assignments in Spaces System Preferences does not assign the application to the desired space.
- Resolves an Exposé issue that may result in only a subset of windows being shown.

To update to the current version of Leopard, choose Software Update from the Apple menu. If your computer is not up-to-date, other software updates available for your computer may appear and you will be prompted to install them. Some updates must be installed prior to others, so you should run Software Update more than once to make sure you ultimately get everything up to date.

Softpedia has rated Mass Effect 9, User rating is 8.9 and critic rating is 9.1 .
Here’s the review from softpedia-
When Mass Effect was originally released last November on the Xbox 360, it unveiled a vast, beautiful galaxy populated by diverse, fascinating alien races. Players stepped onto this stage as Commander Shepard, a hero at the vanguard of humanity’s ascension in the arena of galactic politics, and thus began an epic story bolstered by engaging characters and rich, branching dialogue. Exciting combat and robust skill management completed the package, but it was not without flaws. Many small issues have been addressed in the PC release, and the result is a more streamlined, more playable version of one of the best role-playing games in recent memory.

The Good

  • All the awesome stuff that made Mass Effect on the 360 great
  • Tech/Biotic power hotkeys make combat fast and fluid
  • Numerous small improvements add up nicely.

The Bad

  • Still hampered by graphical hitches
  • Brief, intermittent load screens.

IGN has rated this game as 9.2.
Here’s the IGN’s review of Mass Effect-

Set 200 years in the future in an epic universe, Mass Effect places gamers in a vast galactic community in danger of being conquered by a legendary agent gone rogue. A spectacular new vision from legendary developers BioWare, Mass Effect challenges players to lead a squad of freedom fighters as they struggle against threatening armies to restore peace in the land.

Mass Effect is the first in a trilogy of games with an overarching story. As the first human Specter – sworn defenders of galactic peace – your mission is to halt the advancing armies of a legendary agent gone rogue. But as you lead your elite team across hostile alien worlds, you will discover the true threat is far greater than anyone imagined.

Compare both the review and make your own choice. My personal rating would be 8.8 for this game.

Antec Three Hundred Gamer Case - Full Hardware Review @circuitremix.com

Antec has three premium lines of consumer computer cases in it’s roster: Performance One, Sonata and Gamer. We’ve already looked at cases from the Performance One and Sonata lines and those cases left with many awards and high ratings. So now all that’s left is a look at Antec’s Gamer line of cases. It’s pretty obvious, but the Gamer line of cases is targeted towards gamers. Antec’s claim for it’s Gamer cases is that they have “unprecedented cooling, convenience, and style.” That’s what we’ll check out today with the entry level Gamer case from Antec, the Three Hundred.

The general style of the Gamer series cases consist of black exteriors, lots of fans (some of them are quite big!) and perforated front panels. Moving from the Three Hundred and up the line, you gain more space, more fans (and even bigger fans!), and a side-panel window.

With our Three Hundred sample, all of these style elements are evident. The case is pure black, has lots of fans (mostly 120mm fans, with one 140mm at the top), and 2/3 of the front panel is perforated, allowing for lots of airflow.

Vista System Tools Survived into Windows 7 M1 - Without a scratch

By: Marius Oiaga, Technology News Editor (Softpedia)

Microsoft already confirmed that Windows 7 will have Windows Vista as its foundation. Like it or not, Windows 7 will be nothing more than an evolution of the current Windows client. According to the little details the Redmond company did manage to make public, the Vista architecture will survive into the next generation of the Windows operating system, and one illustrative example in this context are the system tools. Of course that, at this point in time, the real question is just how much of Windows Vista will be Windows 7?

This because Windows 7 has to be different enough to not only qualify as a standalone and major Windows release but also be perceived as having an identity all of its own, and not be mocked as Vista SP1, Vista R2, and so on and so forth. Judging by Windows 7 Milestone 1 this is not the case at all. The fact of the matter is that Windows 7 is much more Windows Vista than it is Windows 7. Still, M1 was nothing more than an early development milestone, the first taste that Microsoft gave of the next iteration of the operating system.

One area of the operating system that was ignored by change involves the tools (msconfig.exe) which provide users with an insight into the operating system. There is no difference whatsoever between the System Configuration tools in Vista and those available in Windows 7 M1. About Windows, System Information, Remote Assistance, System Restore, Computer Management, Event Viewer, Programs, Security Center, System Properties, Internet Options, Internet Protocol Configuration, Performance Monitor, Task Manager, Disable UAC, Enable UAC, Command Prompt and Registry Editor are all in the same place.

While it is bound that these tools need to make it into the final version of Windows 7, in order to provide continuity, Microsoft also needs to deliver additional items, and not leave the list unchanged from M1. Windows 7 has indeed moved forward, even if all details are gagged to perfection. The U.S. antitrust regulators have already received a new development build of the operating system, with a big chance that it is Milestone 2, although Microsoft is not breathing a single word on it.
